It turns out, I was on to something. I woke up without the need for an alarm and several snoozes , eager to open my laptop, inspired to start creating and refining and emailing and tinkering each and every day. So what changed? What was it about my newfound lifestyle and work day turned me from Sourpuss to the Cheshire Cat?

Did I just hate people?

Was I just spoiled with years of schooling and university that sheltered me from the grind of commuting each day to an office full of diverse characters and pressure to demonstrate initiative? Then he explained what the original definition of introvert is, coined by Carl Jung, Swiss psychoanalyst, and later expanded upon by Katharine Cook Briggs and her daughter Isabel Briggs Myers. The confusion I had over my work history — and much of my school years — started to vanish.

When I understood this new old definition of what an introvert really is, a whole world of self-knowledge and understanding of others opened up to me. Newly armed with this information, my fascination grew. I started to understand why networking was so exhausting.

A Video For Introverts

I started to shape my business around remote work and clients who could accommodate that. I started turning to more strategic ways of getting my work in front of people. A real ah-ha moment came as I started to see a correlation specifically between the creatives I knew and my newfound self-diagnosis.

I was finding that the vast majority of these creatives; illustrators, animators, writers, even musicians who I had assumed were all extroverts if they performed on stage were also introverts. We lamented, over tepid pints of dutch courage, how much we wanted to relax into a hermit lifestyle and commit to our art. Self-promotion, social media, talking about what we do, pitching clients and agents… that was the drag, the painful side of our creative path we would do anything to avoid.

I felt this pain acutely. I also felt called to doing something about our conundrum. I committed myself to first working out an introvert-friendly way to make a career that suited my personality type and preferences, then to helping my fellow creative introverts. I committed to finding a way we could have our introverted cake and eat it too. Mom had been to that same place 30 years before and she described snorkeling from that same beach.

The fish were beautiful, she said. I told her she could still visit that place anytime she wants to by closing her eyes and imagining the quiet, serene scene of warmth and sunlight. I want to follow my own advice. One of the many strengths of introverts is that they are able to get quiet and engage in an active inner life. One way to do that is through guided imagery.

This relaxed state may aid healing, learning, creativity, and performance. It may help you feel more in control of your emotions and thought processes, which may improve your attitude, health, and sense of well-being. Introverts relish being alone. Stepping away from phones, the news, and the busyness of life allowed me to step into my introverted side and be present. Early one morning I walked to a nearby beach.

I sat down and leaned against a large boulder. Except for the crashing waves and my footprints in the deep, wet sand I was totally alone. I believe it will become easier the more I do it. I can return to the island and regain the power of quiet.

She also announced suggested actions for participating in this movement and how her organization will be seeking concrete examples of change. She believes that the movement will be helped by men AND women speaking up to protest injustice. Watson said that her passion and the importance of this issue helped her to overcome her pre- speech nervousness and self-doubt. When quiet introverts who are not used to speaking put time into preparation the results clearly pay off. I do encourage you to listen to her stirring speech and hear her eloquently describe her own experiences, share some sobering stats about women and explain why she is so strongly committed to seeing change occur.

It is the idea and the ambition behind it because not all women have received the same rights I have. Both men and women should feel free to be strong. This quiet influencer and introverted leader has wowed millions and given us a focal point for change. She has already made a tremendous difference by getting the world to pay attention. One of the many images on introverts onlineI. Beth is not exaggerating! One great result of the current introvert revolution is that awareness about introverts has increased exponentially. He makes friends easily, is very talkative, loves to have parties and invites people he hardly knows to come over for dinner.

I myself am a good example of an introvert. I much prefer to spend my time alone writing this column or writing books than going to a party or just hanging out with friends. My favorite activities require a lot of solitude, like doing research or exercising on the treadmill while watching DVDs of cooking techniques. Extroverts are starting to pay attention to the needs of introverts and so, thankfully are organizations. Writing is power and with more quality media about introverts emerging we have a chance to see our society and our workplaces becoming more inclusive.
